Steve Vai in Bristol!

This weekend saw a lot of music and different locations. It starts with Friday 9th June in Bristol. I have always been a fan of Steve Vai and his incredibly melodic and virtuosic guitar playing. I remember hearing “For The Love of God” for the first time when I was 14 and trying to learn it on my Epiphone Les Paul with no whammy bar! I was struck by just how different he could make the same melody sing, just by changing certain nuances. That’s what sets him apart.

Fast forward 11 years and I witness him play the first few haunting notes on his black Ibanez Pia and it’s unlike anything I’ve experienced before. The sheer volume, tone and musical execution is something to behold, and taking place only metres from where I am stood. 2 hours of pure guitar mastery and my inspiration is well and truly back.

24 hours later and I am performing myself in Reading (another wedding) to perhaps a less appreciative audience…

24 hours later and I am performing again but in Oxford (another wedding) to a much more appreciative audience! That’s how the cookie crumbles.

All in all, witnessing Steve Vai live served as a stark reminder of why I play the guitar and what makes it so special. Perhaps my gigs aren’t quite on his level yet, but he is 35 years my senior!

Catch you next time,

Lewis
